Basal Thermometer

When you decided to embark on TTC (Trying to Conceive) journey, there is always more questions that follow?

a. How do I know if I ovulate already?
b. When is my fertile period?
c. When I should start to BD (baby dancing)?
d. What should I take to improve my chances of conception?

And the list can goes on and on.

Today, I will like to introduce Basal Thermometer (BBT) to you.

Basal body temperature (BBT) is the lowest temperature attained by the body during rest (usually during sleep). It is generally measured immediately after awakening and before any physical activity has been undertaken.

You may ask, why do I need to take my basal body temperature?

Our BBT varies throughout our menstrual cycle. During pre-ovulation (follicular) phase, the level of estrogen present is higher which results in lower BBT. Once you have ovulated, the progesterone level will increase which result in higher BBT. The rise in temperatures can most commonly be seen the day after ovulation, but this varies and BBTs can only be used to estimate ovulation within a three day range. The temperature spike for 3 days continuously with an increase of 0.3 degrees celcius will mean that you have ovulated.
There may be instances whereby you have tested positive on ovulation test kits for days but you are unsure if you had already ovulated. BBT will give you a good indication on which day you have actually ovulated.

To measure BBT, you will need a Basal Thermometer which is digital and with 2 decimals. Normal thermometers that we use such as ear thermometer, will not give you accurate readings of your BBT. Hence, it is best to invest in a good basal thermometer to aid you on your TTC journey.

Ideally, you will need to take your BBT at the same timing everyday when you first woke up and you have not left your bed. It is ideal to place your basal thermometer right next to your pillow whereby you can reach and pop into your mouth without much movement from your bed for better accuracy.
